Organic Market Update

Week 23, 2023

Mangoes

Mexican Organic Mangos are promotable on the Tommy Atkins variety, as growers begin to transfer further north. Larger sized fruit will be a little more limited than 10 and 12 ct. fruit. Organic Ataulfo Honey Mangos continue to be popular, with ripe and outstanding flavor. Florida grown Organic Mangos will be available in limited supply in the months of June and July. This fruit is not hot water treated giving a high-quality eating experience.

Stone Fruit

California Organic Cherries are now in steady supply, with prices easing slightly. Organic Peaches and Nectarines are in a sporadic supply situation, with steady supplies expected as growers hit their stride towards the middle of the month. Organic Plums and Pluots should begin in mid-June. Organic Apricots out of California are back, but with very limited supplies and strong prices. Expect these conditions to exist for the season until Washington Organic Apricots begin.

Green Beans

Organic Green Bean quality continues to be a struggle, while volumes remain limited in early June. Expect limited to no availability throughout most of the month until production moves locally in early to mid-July.

Broccoli

Organic Broccoli production will tighten in early-June and will create increased prices. In addition to Virginia and California production, Pennsylvania Organic Broccoli is beginning, with high prices in mid-June.
Organic Broccoli Rabe is returning after gapping for most of May, with elevated pricing.

Tomatoes

Organic Grape Tomatoes and Organic Cherry Tomatoes have started out of Georgia, and quality is outstanding. Organic Roma Tomato prices are expected to increase slightly in the middle of June. Quality is outstanding, and availability will be steady out of Mexico.

Melons

Organic Mini Watermelon prices continue to ease with promotable volumes out of Mexico. Quality has been excellent, with great sugar. New crop Organic Seedless Watermelon prices are also easing as supplies becoming more available out of California and Mexico. The quality has been excellent. Organic Cantaloupes and Honeydew are lightening up in Mexico as the desert production in California starts up.

Berries

Organic Strawberry prices remain promotable. Baja, MX has finished, with full California production from the Santa Maria and Watsonville areas. Quality has looked very nice, and supplies remain plentiful. June will be a good time for ads and in-store specials. Organic Blackberry prices remain steady, with light volumes coming from Mexico and transitioning into California production. Quality has been excellent on steady volumes. Organic Blueberry prices are steady in California and Georgia. Georgia growing regions had rain in late May, limiting harvests and shortening supply. Quality, however, has been nice overall, and supplies are steady. New Jersey Organic Blueberries should begin this weekend. Organic Raspberry prices are steady in California, on ample supplies and pricing. Quality has been fair to good.

Grapes

New crop Organic Grapes are ramping up in Mexico, with a full array of Red, Green, and Black Grapes available. Prices are high, but relief is expected in mid-June.
