TerraFresh Organics - A Fresh Label with a Familiar Mission
July 30, 2020
Supplying fresh, organic fruit has been a passion for Greg Holzman and Steve Akagaki since they began working together over 30 years ago. In 1985, Holzman invested in an apple orchard and within two years, successfully converted it into an organic farm. Shortly after, Holzman recruited Akagaki and Purity Organic/Pacific Organic Produce was born.
The two set out to not only support organic farmers, but to seek conventional growers whose farms could be converted into organic farms and supply organic fruit year-round.

Holzman and Akagaki recently rejoined forces to create TerraFresh Organics (TFO), an organic fruit company focused on supplying organic citrus, mangoes, stone fruit, grapes to North America.
TerraFresh Organics was formed in partnership with Harbinger Group, which shares a commitment to organics through its companies Misionero, Green Wave Farms and Vertical Foods. Utilizing Harbinger’s grower partnerships, the company has rolled out organic fruits under Misionero’s Earth Greens label.
“We are thrilled to be reviving past partnerships and developing new, strategic relationships with growers and farmers,” said Akagaki. “The partnership with the Harbinger Group brings us technology and other resources that are crucial to be a top-tiered supplier. It allows us the ability to service our customers and build programs that meet the growing expectations of today’s consumer."
Akagaki believes that while the dynamics of marketing organic fruit has changed, the experience he and Holzman share make TerraFresh poised for great opportunities in the future. “The world has gotten smaller, the choices greater and the competition has become fiercer. I believe TerraFresh Organics is well-positioned to be a leader in the organic category, “he said.

“Years of relationships; years of learning through trial and error have paved the way for us to fulfill our customer’s needs efficiently. We believe in creating long lasting partnerships with our growers. Growing organically makes for a sustainable thriving farm.”
Challenges during the pandemic have not escaped TerraFresh. Holzman said the company is taking the necessary steps and protocols to provide safe products to customers. “Physical distancing and extra precaution taken for safety from the fields to packing houses has presented challenges in the supply chain, “he said. If you can’t adapt you cannot survive. We are proud that we were pioneers in organics and we will continue to do what is best for a sustainable future.”
Holzman also believes opportunities are on the horizon as consumer habits change.
“I see continuous growth as people continue to read more about not only their personal health but recognizing the need to continue to work towards a healthier environment. I believe the time's right to re-engage with organic farmers as the category continues to thrive.”
