Sambrailo Launches New Sustainable Packaging

By Jenn LaVardera, MS RD

From the consumer perspective, it’s easy to take for granted the process of getting fresh organic produce from farm to store. Lesser known are the packaging companies, the unsung heroes of agriculture.  without whom the grocery store shelves would look a lot less colorful than they do today.

Since 1923, Sambrailo Packaging been facilitating the transport of fresh fruits and vegetables from farm to store by continually developing innovative packaging solutions to adapt to the evolving needs of growers, shippers, marketers, retailers and consumers. Best known introducing the strawberry clamshell, Sambrailo has long been creating packaging that benefits product quality and this year’s commitment is packaging that benefits the earth.

In response to the growing demand for sustainability in packaging choices, Sambrailo’s new ReadyCycle™ packaging provides an eco-conscious clamshell alternative that utilizes paperboard as the structural material as opposed to PET (polyethylene terephthalate).  ReadyCycle is free of labels and added adhesives, and is 100% recyclable. Convenient for consumers and beneficial for the earth, ReadyCycle can be placed directly into the recycling bin and enter the existing cardboard recycle stream. ReadyCycle is available in a dry pint basket, and 6, 12, 16 and 32 ounce packaging.

“We have always partnered with our customers to find and offer the best solutions for their product and operations,” says Sara Lozano, Marketing Manager for Sambrailo. “ReadyCycle™ is packaging that goes beyond the produce; it's about choice and environmental impact. Our world and communities are asking for sustainability in every industry and look for it in their day-to-day purchases.”

Sambrailo’s goal with ReadyCycle is to help reduce plastic usage, waste and pollution in landfills and oceans. While there are no labels or adhesives on the packaging, ReadyCycle does offer full marketing real estate with direct print on the paperboard with vegetable-based inks. According to the company, the packaging design is fully customizable and can be tailored to fit any product with short lead times and minimal tooling costs.

"The ReadyCycle™ product line offers full marketing flexibility, part specification and sizing versatility, and the power of choice of paper vs. plastic,” continued Lozano. “We envision ReadyCycle™ as an ideal packaging solution and experience for stores and consumers."

Growers are already taking advantage of what ReadyCycle can offer, with Live Earth Farm sharing on Instagram: “Sustainability comes in many shapes and sizes, and reducing our dependence on petroleum-based plastic is an ongoing project for us.” The company has started using ReadyCycle for their berry packaging needs.

ReadyCycle is available now in the following sizes: Dry Pint basket, 6 oz., 12 oz., 16 oz., 32 oz.
